The Story of Joseph Yates
When Joseph Yates was born on 12 January 1819 in Croft, Lancashire, his father, Samuel, was 36 and his mother, Ellen, was 41. He was baptised at Risley Chapel.
Joseph lives with his parents on Lady Lane according to the 1841 census and is still there for the 1851 census. The entry next to theirs on the 1851 sheet shows the Whittle family including Sarah Whittle and a daughter Mary Ann Whittle age 1.
William Whittle is born in 1853.
In 1861, Joseph is living at The Row, Culcheth with his brother Richard and family.
In 1868, the marriage of Joseph to Sarah Whittle is listed as taking place in Warrington in January.
Their granddaughter Elizabeth Ellen Whittle is born in September 1868. It could be a coincidence, but I notice that this is 9 months after their marriage. This would mean nothing in most cases, but Most of Elizabeth’s life is spent living with her Grandparents and she certainly never lives with her mother, Mary Ann Whittle. There is no father named on the birth certificate.

In 1871 Joseph is on Lady Lane and is the head of the household with his occupation as butcher. His wife Sarah’s occupation is blank. Mary Ann Whittle is listed as ‘daughter’, her occupation is also blank. They also have a lodger named William Cook.
Joseph passed away on 17th February 1875 and was buried at Croft Unitarian Chapel in Grave C8 along with his younger brother Samuel.
In 1881, Sarah is living on Lady Lane with son William Whittle (butcher) and granddaughter (Elizabeth) Ellen Whittle aged 12.
In 1888, Elizabeth Ellen dies. She is buried with her grandfather at Croft Unitarian Chapel.
In 1891, Sarah is living in Tyldesley with Ellen Whittle and her son, as a servant.
In 1901 she is living with her son William Whittle and three of his children at Hope Farm, Culcheth.
They are still there in 1911, but with just two of the children and one grandchild of William's.
Just 3 weeks after filling in the 1911 census, Sarah passes away and was buried at Croft Unitarian Chapel with her husband and granddaughter.
