The Story of Mary Yates
When Mary Yates was born on 16 August 1804 in Croft, Lancashire, her father, Samuel, was 21, and her mother, Ellen, was 26.
In the 1841 census she is living at home with her mother, father, sister Ellen and brother Joseph on Lady Lane.
She married William Ellison on 8 February 1845 at Christ Church, Croft. The witnesses were Ellen and Joseph Yates. They were married by licence by Rector Thomas Kirkman.

They had a son, William during their marriage. There is no record of a baptism or burial, but he is commemorated on the grave of William and Mary. It says ‘William their son who died young’.
Mary’s husband William passed away on 10th April 1849 and was buried at Croft Unitarian Chapel on 15th April 1849. (Grave C5)
In 1851, Mary is living in Little Town with William’s three brothers.
In 1861 she is living at School House, Little Town with two of William’s brothers and another woman named Margaret Leigh. Mary is shown as a dairy maid and the other lady is a scullery maid.
Despite searching through the 1871 census of Croft and Culcheth, I cannot find her listed. It could be that she stayed out of the area on the night it was taken or had moved house since 1861.
Update: When researching Mary's sister Ellen, I found that she had stayed with her during the census in Bedford, Leigh.
Mary died on 31 July 1874 at the age of 69 and was buried with William at Croft Unitarian Chapel.
